Step-by-Step Instructions to Clean Your Pool Filter Cartridge

Keeping your pool water clear starts with regular filter maintenance. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to clean your cartridge-style pool filter like a pro.

First, press the stop button on your pump system to shut everything down. Once the pump is off, open the air release valve—this helps relieve pressure and makes it easier to remove the canister lid.

Next, squeeze the red locking handle and unscrew the lid. Be careful—water may splash out. Once open, remove the filter cartridge and bring it to a cleaning area.

To clean the filter, we recommend using an Aqua Comb, which is especially effective at removing debris like dog hair. You can also use a power blast nozzle, available at most hardware stores for just a few dollars. Start at the top of the filter and work your way down, making sure to rinse between the pleats.

After thoroughly cleaning the cartridge, place it back into the canister over the standpipe. Press it down firmly, reattach the lid, and spin until you hear it click. That sound means it’s sealed properly.

Leave the air valve open and press the resume button to restart the pump. As the system primes, air will be released. Once you see water spraying steadily from the air valve, close it—and your filter system is ready to go!
